We spend a lot of time discussing the myths surrounding audio processing for digital TV. Clearly there is a loudness problem that has become increasingly worse with the transition to DTV. Besides the loud commercials (which we've always had) there are also differences in loudness between network and local programming as well as varying loudness between different program elements.
To fix the problem it helps to have an understanding of today's digital transmission system and the ATSC standards for American television. We talk about metadata and dialnorm and how it can be used to manage loudness. We talk about up-mixing to keep all you content in the same format so the audio image stays consistent and also about down-mixing since the majority of the viewing audience still gets television in mono and stereo.
